The terrace above San Niccolò with the whole city laid out across the Arno: the dome, Palazzo Vecchio's tower, the bridges. Walk up the ramps from San Niccolò for sunset, then continue up to San Miniato.

Give it a whole morning. A same-day ticket is cheaper than an advance one; after 16:00 there is a reduced late ticket.

The neighbourhood food market east of Santa Croce, smaller and more local than the Mercato Centrale: produce stalls outside, butchers and a lunch counter in the hall. Mornings only.

The Oltrarno's square: Brunelleschi's last church behind a plain front, artisans' workshops in the side streets, and bars and trattorias that fill the piazza in the evening.

Museo Nazionale del BargelloCentro storico · Renaissance sculpture in a fortress-like former prison: Donatello's bronze David, early Michelangelo, the competition panels for the Baptistery doors. Much quieter than the Uffizi.

A small terraced rose garden just below Piazzale Michelangelo, with the same view and a fraction of the crowd. Best in May, when the roses flower; a quiet pause on the way up.

Brunelleschi's Dome climbPiazza del Duomo · 463 steps between the two shells of the dome, past the Last Judgement frescoes, to the lantern terrace over the red roofs. Only with the Brunelleschi Pass and a time slot booked in advance (it cannot be changed); take an early slot.Palazzo PittiPitti · The Medici's later palace: the Palatine Gallery's Raphaels and Titians hung frame to frame, the royal apartments and the modern art gallery. Combine with Boboli on one ticket.
